Tom A. here a grateful sober alcoholic by the grace of a wonderful Higher Power. My favorite slogan is "Any damn fool can stay sober for twenty-four hours." I heard that at my very first A.A. meeting and it is still working. Love and prayers from an alky who cares. God Bless - Tom A.

I love all the slogans they have touched my life in many ways, but the one that hits home the best is,"But for the Grace of God". This is my 5th anniversery and It seems like only yesterday that I was taking that last drink while sitting on some church steps in my town, but little did I know God was there looking out for me and all I had to do was ask for his help. I have been thankful everyday since. Thanks for letting me share and God bless all.

For a guy who raced all over the place and never got anything accomplished.. EASY DOES IT.. then I read an interpertation for easy does it in " A.A. Comes of Age " make haste slowly, instead of racing why not just jog along I seem to be able to go a lot further and get a lot more done. Sure helps to avoid a heart attack.

"You are not alone", is my favorite saying for some odd years now. I always questioned this, because I felt so alone even being surrounded by loved ones and those who understood me. That was until I discovered my HP; which leads me to my daily dance: G.U.I.DANCE( God, you and I dance). CONGRADS to Charlie Darling and Darrin and I pray that ya'll have many more anniversaries to come and be grateful for.

My favorite slogans that are often misunderstood and constantly missused is "First things First" Which means "God/Higher Power first" "Keep coming back" often pissed me off, especially when I couldn't get all the answers in one meeting. But like anything in this program once I started to "WORK IT" and finally understood that anything that was suggested really meant it was directed... "Keep coming back" to me means "stay tuned... more will be disclosed" I now tell relapsers not to keep coming back, but to "STAY" and commit yourself.

"Accept, Accept, Accept" This what my dad - an AA oldtimer - always said when I was much younger and it drove me nuts. But after 10 years of drinking - and 2 months sobriety - it now makes a whole lot of sense.

Hi all, Harry here. I like this topic. I've been around for awhile and I have to say I've relied on ALL the slogans at some point. The one's most pertinent for me today are "Let go and let God" (that's a BIG one for me) "This to shall pass" and there's one which really isn't listed as a "slogan" but i've heard it in the rooms and I think its a great one for for newer members..."Don't quit before the miracle" God bless and thanks for letting me type.

I have only been sober for 12 days now but when I did admit to myself that I was an alcholic, this line from the movie Shawshank Redemption came to mind. "You can either get busy living or you can get busy dying." Thank God, he gave me the sense to chose AA and hope for a meaningful life.

This was a topic about 5 years ago and is archived; I've turned to it many, many times to help me. My favorites change with my needs. Right now, it's LIVE AND LET LIVE (realizing that that entails two different instructions) and I CAN'T. GOD CAN. I THINK I'LL LET HIM. and 24 HOURS CAN START ANYTIME. and lastly, contemplating that "with the measure ye mete it shall be meted unto you" applies ALSO to my judging mySELF harshly. Good topic.

"Freely giving what was freely giving to us..." "He's a bleeding deacon" (He's an unhappy old-timer). "He's on a dry drunk" (He is simultaneously sober and in disagreement with A.A.). "He's sitting on the pity pot" (He is indulging in self-pity; not being grateful for A.A.). "Who would you rather associate with, your former drinking buddies, or sober people in recovery?" And undoubtedly, the single most used slogan of all time is: "Utilize, Don't Analyze."

Oh boy! That nearly covered every slogan there is, but one and that is I think the most important slogan of all, that is: MONEY TALKS, BULLSHIT WALKS! Or "No money, no honey". Now I just wonder why people are attracted to idealistic slogans and never touched the reality of life which all comes down to Money. All relationships are about money, how people treat you is about money, when you start to get sober and be back on your feet then you will have money, and that's how you are being validated by people, the amount of money you have as your value of a human being. The more money you have the more respect you gain from people and society at large, especially if you know how to keep it and make it work for you for more money. Was there really a poor politician in office or a leader where he lives in poor conditions? Would people listen more eagerly to a bum talking in meetings or to the middle class guy who's got a good job going and who's got a lot of friends around that agrees with him. As I see it we want to believe in cliche's that really not the reality but lies or illusions, because we want to believe in those lies, so that our reality, the values we have set down to judge and relate to our fellow human beings is actually the very opposite of those things we want to believe, to cover up our consciences. Then afterwards we go out from there feeling good that we really were not as bad as our practices and actions were. The same as when we leave the church service, despite the fact that we know in our churches we are segregated by kind.

Pierre, The reason the saying BULLSHIT WALKS AND MONEY TALKS AND NO MONEY,NO HONEY was not on the list is simply because it is not one of the fellowship's slogans. While most things do revolve around money. Our wonderful program is not about money, never has been, never will be.While it is true that one has to have money in order to exist,it is a necessity,a vehicle by which to acquire things. One thing we alkies know for sure is you cant buy sobriety, you have to want it and only a person can do that for themselves.

((((Dave T))), welcome and happy 12 days sober! (((Donnie))), happy 5 years sober! (((Charlie Darling))), happy 7 years sober! My favorite slogan: "Newcomer, you are the most important person in the room." That made me feel so good when I came in being so suicidal that I almost threw me away. That was 26 years ago. So I say: "Newcomer, you are the most important person in the room."...

HI everyone Deb alcoholic. During my very first meetings there was an old timer who would say to me. "God never closes one door that he doesn't open another, but it maybe hell in the hall." I was in the hall for a long time and still go there periodically but at least there is hope.

Thanks Sippery Sliding, this is one thing I like in A.A. are the cliches , "No Cross Talking" and "Take what you want and leave the rest". Yes, I agree with you, we have our traditions, which explains that well, "Principles before Personalities". But the longer you stick around in a group the more you will know who are the "Mr. and Mrs. A.A. Personalities" around. And I know better never to cross those people unless I planned it to be my last meeting there. Much of these "personalities" of course has the same stories, "from D.T.'s to Success and Fortune", which is also about money. That's why they can TALK, and have a lot of support from the people around, and I know this is the most important thing in groups, your rapport with people not what you say in meetings. I know that in my 14 years in different places, I have to "walk" most of the times, but not in the sense of "Walk The Talk", which can seen of course by the success you make after being sober, but as in "B.S. walks". When you find that you are comfortable and well accepted by the people around then the next thing for you is to want what they have and that is to be and stay sober. The bottomline is although it is not explicitly implied, it is still about Money that goes along with its "spiritual" personalities. See that just shows that when a person has been successful in his endeavors, then most likely he has a good grip on his spirituality. Thats why we always vote on people that are well off, to assert our approval of their values. Now let me just clarify the Religious notion I had mentioned above before I will be burned at stake by the Witch Hunters who I think still predominates: Christianity which our good program has been based upon its principles and which most of us are, is based upon Christ's teachings. Does not Christ say, "It is harder for the camel to enter the eye of the needle than for a rich man to enter the Kingdom of God?", or when that rich person wants to follow him he told him right off,"Give everything you have to the poor and follow me?", or His beatitudes where can you find him admiring the qualties of the rich, the happy people of higher social status? but the poor, the oppressed, the lowly people of society which he states are the Kingdom of God. I f we are really Christians with Christain principles then why don't we idealized these people and their personalities as the ideal Person to approve and vote for? You know the reason why don't you? It is the same thing I was trying to assert from my first psycho babble above. what we think we are are entirely different from what we really are. And you don't have to be mean to me any more than how you have been mean to me ever since you know me. Your being mean means that you are better moral faithful spiritual person than me and that gives you the right to be mean to me right?

My favorite slogan is "Pain is inevitable; Misery is optional". It took me awhile to realize that when I was trying to drink my pain away, I was actually holding on to the pain and wallowing in it. Peace

I am a newcomer, almost 6 months, one day at a time, but the first thing I heard was "you don't have to drink ever again". That hit home and it was like a wait was lifted! I really don't have to drink ever again.

Barbara Alcoholic. Hey there, this is my first time at this site. Right now my favorite saying is "You can't save your ass and your face at the same time." Quite frankly I have been trying to save face a little too much over the past few months. I have been Sober for a little over 4 years now(12/14/99) and recently moved to Ohio from So Cal. I have been sober since my first AA meeting, and after the first few months I never doubted those people who share in meetings about what happens to Alcoholics when they stop 'doing the deal', but for some reason when I made the move in September, I didn't find the connection that I was looking for, and my program has been moved to the back burner in my life. And I am here to tell you, IT IS NOT COMFORTABLE AT ALL. Its funny how I know the problem (me) and the solution (god through the steps... all twelve of them... with a sponsor) and I am still sluggish at getting into action! Luckily I still know that God never gives me more than I can handle, so as long as I just do my part I can continue to stay sober. Thanks for listening to me, I gotta go get into action.

Morning all! Good day to be sober. It's not necessarily a "slogan" per se, but one of my most favorite's is: We judge ourselves by our intentions, while others judge us by our actions. I try to recall that each day and repeat it to myself. Peace.

Hi All, I'm Susan and I'm an Alcoholic. I love hearing the slogans and sayings that others find important to their spiritual journey. For me, early on, when I was so full of fear and questions: "HOW? NOW!" (Honesty, Openmindedness and Willingness are the essentials of recovery. But these are indispensible), "Bring your ass, the rest will follow", and "If your way worked so well, you wouldn't be here; try taking the cotton out of your ears and putting in your mouth for a while" were key. Also, when I asked how an oldtimer did it: "Don't Drink, Go to Meetings, and Don't Die". Lately, I'm using: "Resentments are when you didn't get what you wanted in the past, Anger is when you don't get what you want in the present, and Fear is that you won't get what you want in the future", "Is it a stepping stone or a stumbling block", "My level of serenity is inversely proportional to my level of expectations" and something man with 35 years said at an aniversary meeting the other day: "Don't be afraid to carry the message" (Pass on to others what was so freely given to you). Thanks all for being here.

Hi, Bill M , alcoholic I met an Amishman from Ohio speaking in Pgh. and he told me something based on an AA slogan that has stayed with me. i.e. If you keep one eye on yesterday and another on tomorrow you will be cockeyed today. Slogans are great but if tey don't develop feet they get lost.

Hi gang, greetings from W.V.Live and let live is my favorite. Early in sobriety I ordered a set of the slogans from GSO, and put them on the walls of my living room. Sorround yourself with the program. It sunk in. Joe B.

Hi all, I'm Susan and I'm an Alcoholic. (Pete, AZ) Hon, KISS isn't one of the 'original' 5 slogans, but "Live and Let Live" is. Also, Rule 62 "Don't take yourself too d**m seriously" came right about the same time.

Hi Mina, welcome to AA. you are the most important person in our discussion meeting. Why not go ahead and try a face to face meeting now, you had the courage to join us and admit your problem, congratulations!!, you're on the first step. I admire you for sharing. I've received much hope from AA, and stayed sober for 9.75 years now thanks to AA. I know I couldn't have done it on my own. Keep coming back Mina, and thanks everyone for sharing. Remember, you're only as sick as your secrets.

Hi I,m Duane a grateful recovering alcoholic, the 21st of this month I will have 7 years sober, I went to my first meeting Jan. 1983, what I have learned is the sayings are good but if not put into practice they are useless.I recently moved to TN from CA.and I am happier than I have ever been in my life, sometimes a move is good. And as for "take what fits and leave the rest" if my thinking was that great I wouldn't need A.A. my thinking earned my seat in alcoholics anonamous. May I see some of you on the journey to happy desteny may God blees and keep you untill then.
